Earlier this week when the threat of possible fuel tanker strikes was mentioned in the press, the UK coalition Government quickly advised all motorists to go out and top up their fuel tanks. Unfortunately this seemingly logical statement has had the opposite effect.
The media have probably played their part by piggy backing the Government's statements by referring back to the fuel strikes and refinery blockades back in 2000. What has ensued over recent days is the sight of panic buying and petrol forecourts running dry.
It has taken me two days to find petrol due to the temporary closure/ fuel shortages at Tesco's and Sainsbury's nearby, but thank God for Texaco who rather cunningly looked closed but were actually open! I was able to top up and should be ok for another two weeks now, although since yesterday the pre-Easter strike has been been called off. So hopefully the panic buying will stop now and people will stop acting like the world is about to end.
